Mid-Year Health update

Mid-Year Health update

Almost half the year is gone and I am stalled at around 215lbs.

I am so blessed to have an active family. An upcoming weekend we have a road trip to NE OK for an outlaw trail series run. Previous years I’ve done the 5K while my wife (my better half) has completed full Ultra Marathons. She’s a rockstar and positive influence in my life to rage, rage into the dying of the light.

Last year’s 5k there were sections that I’ve had to walk due to being completely winded and not having the endurance to continue nonstop. I believe this past 5 months I’ve been consistent enough to train my zone 2 running pace in order to keep my time within 15 min miles regardless of the terrain. Reba checked out the elevation gain and the Osage Hills national park area is challenging.

After this challenge we are planning on trying 5×5 starting strength 3 days per week routine. I am thinking we do a 8 or 12 week program and have an old school spiral notebook for lbs and rep tracking.

I still believe I’ll be able to get back to body weight strength (over 200lbs) but it is definitely unrealistic to expect those results by the end of this year. Adding what strength exercises through Peloton and gym sessions has been extremely beneficial to my overall body health. Right now, I am working out max 135lb barbell weight to build up my compound movement base again. Mixed with being able to jog 10 min mile makes me feel moderately in shape for nearly being 50.

Speaking of being 50 and the body not able to bounce back as previous. I have to bring up the death spiral of old men playing Disk Golf. I feel like It is a lot like baseball. You have more time to be at peak performance but eventually it is the joints that get ground down. My hip and knee sometimes feel like they are going to fall off if I play more than two days in a row. I have to cross train and I have to limit my park sessions.

I am mid at Disk Golf. But I love the hour break it gives me. Back in my 30s when I was feeling my fattest and drank too much. I always had disk golf to help me get my 8-10k daily steps in. I’ve used disk golf as a health crutch for over the past decade. Now that I am focusing on mobility, flexibility, and strength it has translated to way better coordination on every outting recently. Also, my forehand is finally not a complete embarassment, and I’m having a hoot throwing new flex lines. Well.. I still have at least another decade that I think I can throw weekly without injury. By my 60s I have a goal to fully transition to OG, original golf. OG is still too expensive for my current budget.

Speaking of budget, I am not using MacroFactor for the past 3 weeks after coming back from vacation. I’ve not been that militant on calorie tracking. I’ve been going with an idea of around 500 solid calories for breakfast and lunch. Then at dinner I try to keep it at around 1200 calories. I subscribed to the annual plan. However, a new challenger has entered the ring and taken my money. Wife bought a Hume smart weight scale and I bought the companion health band. I just recieved it in the mail and continueing to learn more about how below average my health is. My metabolic age is currently 56 but working on lowering it.

Last goal to mention on this post is that I am challenging myself to be below 200lbs by end of year. I’ve not been below 200lbs since before I was married. I’ve been fat and happy since before 2012.

I plan on getting 4 more tattoos next year, if I get the body to show them off. ๐Ÿ™‚
